Content for me or content for you?

Direction

It truly amazes me that so many bloggers are blogging about themselves and their own ego and not about things that can help their readers.  One blog will probably quickly come to mind – John Chow (hate mentioning his name – makes me look like I’m a follower, when I’m not) – his endless drivell and ‘interesting’ videos about how he’s being a complete goon seems to turn people on.  Does he actually care about his readers, or his he just interested in posting and making money? I’ll let you make up your own mind.  I decided on writing this post when I read some thoughts of Vic on bloggerunleashed.com – an interesting blog on the ‘real story’ about making money online.  He looks at how people could make money and ‘unleashes his thoughts onto his blog; I’d recommending reading his posts on JohnChow Unclogged and Text-link-ads (bit of comment conversation from Darren Rowse too).  They’re both interesting posts as well as the rest of the articles on bloggerunleashed – just watch out, as he doesn’t hold back!

Do you consider yourself a blogger for yourself, or a blogger for the people?  Take a look at how you can become both:

4 tips to become a Content for me (the blogger) blogger

  • Post about what you’ve been doing at a conference and how much you’re not doing on your blog
  • Post how much money you are making from your readers and lead them to mindless drivell and unsuccessful ‘get rich quick’ programs
  • Post pointless paid per review posts (usually from Pay Per Post, or Review Me) on topics that are totally off topic to your blog and that will be of no interest to your readers
  • Allow the content of your blog to be written by a lot of guest bloggers, detracting from the message and community you really want to portray

4 tips to become a Content for you (the reader) blogger

  • Research a topic for each post, looking in detail and why people look at certain things, and why they would want to know about what you are writing
  • Write quality content that people want to read, but don’t just be one sided, look at different points of view and summarise
  • Link to posts on other blogs that will be interesting to the readers of your blog, so that they can gain some more information about the topic you’re writing about
  • Reply to comments and create a sense of community on your blog, trying not to leave out a reply to commentators commentors (building a community blog)

4 tips to producing Mindless Content as a blogger

  • Produce a post that is less than 200 words long on a company or blog that has no relevance to what your readers want to read
  • Write every now and then to apologise to your readers that you’ve been too busy to blog these past two weeks, but you’ll be posting more often now
  • Just post a video you saw on you-tube that was ‘funny’ with no content or thoughtful writing from yourself (yes, videos are good, but they need to be on topic and useful)
  • Publish a post that has links of ‘what you missed me doing’ by posting what you were twittering about last week

So, what do you do in your posts?

I do a little bit more of the content for you (readers) more than the content for me – just check back at the blog (or check your RSS feed, or Email) to see the start of my newbie blog steps series tomorrow.

So, there you have it, my take on whether you’re a content for your readers blogger, or a content for yourself blogger; it would be interesting to know what you think?

    Dark Ninja Move 1 - Blog Circles…

I guess that this isn’t so much of a Dark move, but it is frowned upon by Google.
Nobody underestimates the power of a Blog Circle. Everyone knows that a Blog Circle can help their traffic greatly. You can think of Entrecard as a BIG Blog Circle …

I could do without all the swearing on his site, I thought his treatment of Darren was a bit harsh and he got personal when Darren responded. Although I tend to agree with some of his critiques of John Chow. I do read John Chow’s blog some, I’ve gotten some ideas from it as well as found some other great resources.

I am in agreement with you, I do think he needs to tone down the language just a little, and he does have some good content - just need to get through all the ‘extra’ stuff. He won’t put me off reading any blog he criticizes because everyone has their own opinions and I think that is what makes the blogosphere great.

I do not read ProBlogger or John Chow for the exact reason that they are too full of themselves. Also, who goes to blogs anymore? I love the fact that RSS helps you read blogs and you can easily skip over the “crap” and read in depth the great posts.
